Death Of The Driveway Mechanic

I took auto shop in high school, it was a great class though I was a little out of place with the greasers who made up the rest of the class. I learned alot about cars, engines and machines in general. Since then I've enjoyed doing minor maintenance on my cars, but that is getting tougher and touger all the time.

Today's cars have so many electronic components that a Saturday mechanic can barely do a thing to them. I changed the spark plugs in our old Honda Odyssey a while back - what a hassle! The engine was covered to prevent me from accessing anything. After getting the cover off the plugs (and the wires) were located under a panel that required a torx driver to remove. When I could finally see the plugs they were located such that unless you had a bevy of socket extensions and universals you weren't going to get them out. At the time I couldn't help thinking that all of this extra effort was merely to keep me, and my wrench wielding friends, from doing something that Honda could charge upwards of $50 / hour for. Now Volvo is thinking about not even offering a hood that opens! Talk about shutting out backyard mechanics.
